  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jenny -- An absolute MUST READ!!! : Ryan did an amazing job of conveying a raw and heartfelt perspective on the war in Afghanistan, which is a must read book to help gain insight into America’s involvement and the ups and downs that military members experience while serving there. I could not put this book down. In fact, I ordered another copy to gift to someone else and have told everyone around me about it. The book is easy to read for military members and those who have not served as well. Ryan does an amazing job of explaining what he is writing about, from the vast, beautiful terrain of the mountainous country to even the sometimes hard to understand use of Army acronyms, making sure that the reader knows exactly what is being talked about. Coming from a pilot’s first hand account of flying helicopters in the country, it is as though you are flying in the helicopter right along with him. It is an honest look into a war that could help anyone who reads it gain insightful knowledge into a war and conflict that has become a talking point across the globe in these uncertain times. War is real, raw, heartbreaking, and scary at times, yet our military members do their best to stay as grounded in their beliefs as they possibly can. This book conveys all of this. Well done, Chief Robicheaux. Thank you for this book, and most importantly, thank you for your service. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Johnny Partridge, a terminal lance, USMC -- An honest view of the trip down the rabbit hole of war, military aviation and politics : As a former infantry Marine, having seen and felt the politics of the beginnings of the Gulf War. Thank goodness we didn't have our proverbial hands tied behind our backs with as many rules and regulations as the War in Afghanistan. To risk prison for doing the job that you trained and dedicated your life and family's lives to perform is an unconscionable reality in today's military. Ryan Robiceaux's writing and perspective will suck one in and they will find themselves having read cover to cover expediently. This is a detailed experience and well worth the read. -Semper fi, fellow warrior ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Larry Mars -- A grunt's opinion : Having spent most of my 20 year career with the Marine Corps infantry, we often look up and see aircraft flying by and assume what a leisure life those guys have. Ryan gives a clear perspective of the stress and frustrations pilots endure while trying to give direct support to ground forces in contact. I had no idea of the degree of micromanagement and ambiguous and unrealistic Rules of Engagement these warriors were burdened with. I have a whole new respect for these guys that wear wings. I highly recommend this book! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rotakw -- Highly entertaining! : Not your average military book full of hard facts, technical terms and jargon. This Air Cav trooper's recollection of events captures the things he experienced during his career as a Kiowa Warrior pilot. His clever mixture of humorous situations and serious accounts will have you hooked. Once I started reading this book, I did not want to set it down! Great read! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kristen Swanson -- Great book : Ryan wrote a wonderful book that is full of the spirit of the Air Cav. I flew with Ryan on the 2013 deployment and was reminded of the times we had out there. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Jack Ryan jr meets “The Art of War”! Great read or a gift for a reader. I give it a 10/10. : You will be hooked before Chapter 1 even starts. Great first hand look into the life of a Scout pilot and the daily successes and struggles. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Curtis -- Authentic Retelling of Helicopter Pilots at War : By way of bonafides, I feel it is important up front to disclose that I am a former 11B Infantryman and AH64D/E Apache Helicopter pilot. The area of Afghanistan where Robicheaux deployed in 2013 is the exact same area I patrolled as an Infantryman in 2012. In fact, Ryan left Kyrghystan the same day that I arrived from Afghanistan. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kathleen Madden -- A raw, honest and insightful view of the war in Afghanistan : What I loved most about this book is it is a real story that tells it like it was. I enjoyed the humor and honestly (sometimes raw emotion) capturing the everyday life of a 58 pilot in Afghanistan. Very insightful. ( Reviewed in Germany on October 15, 2021 )
