Uncanny X-Men: The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire Customer Reviews

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ken Baynton -- THIS is why i read the X-men! : To start, i was almost turned off to this by the negative reviews on this site. But when it comes down to it the X-men in space written by Ed Brubaker was enough to draw my dollars in. And i'm glad i went with my gut because this is what the x-men is all about. Professor X, feeling guilt over the Vulcan situation he created gathers a team of X-men to take into space to try to make right the situation and stop Vulcan from destroying the Sh'iar and his ex wife Lilandra. This team consists of Havok, Polaris, Warpath, Rachel Summers and Nightcrawler. Its a strange teaming of x-men, but all the originals (cyclops, and the rest) are as warpath puts it "pissed at you right now". ( Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2008 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Greg S. -- A solid X-Men space story and lead-in to War of Kings : Uncanny X-Men: Rise & Fall of the Shi'ar Empire collects issues #475-486 of Uncanny X-Men, originally published between 2006 and 2007. The hardcover version is over-sized (taller and wider than a typical Marvel graphic novel) and has finished boards with gold foil-stamping. Extras include character designs, cover pencils and sketches, and two interesting interviews, one with Ed Brubaker and the other with Billy Tan. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2011 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from darren albert -- Great : Fun x men cosmic action ( Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carl W. Taitano -- Superior format : This is one of the best xmam series. What really makes this superior is the way it is presented with both panels by panel and zoom feature. You really enjoy the art and can read the text if your eyes need the zoom. Not all comics are presented in this way. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2015 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joshua Quinn Carr -- Must have : If you haven't read Deadly genesis, which introduces Vulcan, (the third summers brother) do that first. You'll enjoy this title a lot more after you do that ( Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from godzilla78 -- quite suprised : Now the Sh'iar empire and the x-men in space usually means one thing to me....complete rubbish. However this was quite a suprise and indeed enjoyable. The story and art are solid throughout but the strongest part to the saga is the characterization of the "b-list" x-men such as havok and warpath. All in all this was much better than i expected it to be. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 13, 2008 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Russell Franklin -- Catching up! : As a reader of Uncanny X-Men through the 90's I found Rise & Fall a great reminder of all the things 80's and 90's X-Men I enjoyed. The fact that the choice of mutants used in this adventure would not be my choice of heros didn't stop it from being the best story I've read in a long while. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from MadManMarvel -- X-Men Space-Opera : Ok, so you've read 'Deadly Genesis' and you want more, well, be prepared for a magnificent 12-issue series that progresses everything wonderfully - but does not actually resolve it all. (Which is why it misses out on the fifth star in my eyes.) Yes, this is all space-opera, it's all about the Shi'ar and the Starjammers and only a small quota of actual X-Men - and I'm a fan so I loved it, but judging from other reviews - even if you're not - there's alot to appreciate here! X-Men featured are Havok, who at last gets a bit of leadership he's not been able to show for decades, Polaris - who's almost back to her heyday, Warpath, who's given more character than ever before...and a love interest, Xavier who is still portrayed as an ethically ambiguous character, Marvel Girl, who's link with the Phoenix force gets her a kind-of love interest too and newcomer Darwin, introduced in the 'Deadly Genesis' series but fleshed out quite well here. Do not buy this book if you're into the X-Men just for Wolverine or any other member - as they're not here - and that really is a refreshing change! Vulcan's history is expanded on and I liked the way his flash-back scenes were all done by a different artist, but, I am amazed he is actually written by the same writer as previously as he already begins his decent into pantomime-villain role and can anyone explain why he no-longer seems to have any mental-powers? For the price, this is a no-brainer - go buy it...but as before, be prepared to want to buy the next chapter...and the next and so on! (The next chapter you'll need is 'Emperor Vulcan' - go look it up - I'll be waiting.) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2011 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ethan Belanger -- X-Men in Space : While the story is really only for those who have followed X-Men for a long time, it's still engaging and action packed. It's great to see an epic X-Men tale without Wolverine and Cyclops in the way. ( Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from vito chiantera -- Great comic : One of the best crossover of all. Starting from "deadly genesis" to this one here (and continuing to the "War of King") this is really a great and intense comic. Really deserve to be read ( Reviewed in Italy on April 15, 2017 )
